Unacceptable This Is of the Day: Mommy blogger Carrie Goldman wrote an article this week about how her adopted daughter Katie was being bullied by her first grade classmates for — of all reasons — liking Star Wars.
The story goes that Katie, who is a big Star Wars fan, has a Star Wars backpack and water bottle which she was very excited to purchase for her new school year. But, after only a few weeks, she told her mom the bottle was too small and that she wanted to take a different one.
After pressing for the real reason, Katie relented:

The first grade boys are teasing me at lunch because I have a Star Wars water bottle.  They say it’s only for boys.  Every day they make fun of me for drinking out of it.  I want them to stop, so I’ll just bring a pink water bottle.

Carrie assured her daughter that it’s okay to be different, and just because she’s a girl doesn’t mean she needs to drink out of pink water bottles. “I don’t want to be too different,” Katie replied. “I’m already different. Nobody else in my class wears glasses or a patch, and nobody else was adopted. Now I’m even more different, because of my Star Wars water bottle.”
Carrie sat Katie down and had a talk with her about the importance of liking what you like, even if it makes you different, and managed to convince her to take the Star Wars bottle to school.
The thing I find most amusing about all this? The boys who teased Katie about her love of Star Wars will spend their entire adult lives looking for a Star Wars geek to settle down with.
